Testing a GoPro on clays...
Testing a GoPro on clays... it is just rubbish!
From 5 stands, it could only resolve clays on two where there was a clear blue sky behind. Too wide an angle and too low a resolution to work with the others.

    Love the method and consistency for target loads! 2 questions, at around what grains of that powder would you start with (im looking to switch from vv310 to get more bulk) How would you anneal if you did not have the AMP? :)

    • @ShootingAndReloading
      @ShootingAndReloading 2 місяці тому

      I won't recommend any charges as the world is too litigious for that. I can only recommend you look at the manufacturers published loads. I'm using the AMP annealer - you can see this in the video.

    Metallic Cartridge reloading, on bottom right of page 6, states - accidents do happen in handloading, either at the bench or with the firing of dangerous handloads. Loading one's own ammunition at home is not a lot different than the assembly of cartridges in a large ammunition factory, the primary difference being the degree of care, caution, or whatever name by which common sense may be known. Shooter's Bible Guide To Handloading, in the "Introduction", on the bottom left of page X, states - Handloading requires a bit of study. because handloading puts you close to things that could impair or abbreviate your life, you're smart to mind these caveats: Yes you can handload at home, but ... Handload only if you can honestly claim a reasonable level of intelligence, proof of which is your willingness to read all caveats twice, take them to heart, and admit in all humility that, no matter how long you've been shooting or how many times you've pumped a press handle, you do not know all there is to know about handloading. And won't ever. Metallic Cartridge reloading, on bottom right of page 16, states - ignorance can get even the most careful of men into trouble if there is some key element that he needs to watch closely and cautiously but he knows nothing about it. Lyman 51st Handloading Handbook, at the bottom left of page 60, states - CAUTION: Static electricity may cause primers to explode. Hodgdon Powder No. 27 Data Manual, section 6-10, under "Handling Primers" states - They demand the respect and careful handling due any device containing explosives. Primers should never be handled, used, ... in bulk, since primers in bulk can explode simultaneously. ... ... ... Precautions should be taken to avoid buildup of static electricity on the person when handling primers or conducting handloading procedures. Loading equipment should be electrically grounded. Speer Handloading Manual Number 15, on page 41, states - Static electricity and the Reloader 1. Static electricity can be highly hazardous for the reloader. 2. primers are most sensitive to static charges. The energy is enough to ignite primer dust in and around priming tools. The dust can ignite and propagate to all the primers in the tube [or tray]. The result is a serious explosion. This is the reason to keep those tubes [and trays] clean! 3. Static charges prefer low humidity environments. take some simple precautions. a. Use a humidifier. b. remove carpets from reloading areas. This is the prime source of static energy accidents. c. Clean the reloading area on a schedule. Routine cleaning removes residues of primers and propellants that can react to static energy. d. Use an anti-static product. Reloader's Guide - Complete, Fully Illustrated Step-By-Step Guide to Handloading Ammunition, on page 129, under Common Reloading Problems states - Plastic powder funnels often pick up a far amount of static electricity ... ... ... this is annoying because powder granules stick to the side of the funnel, and you have to keep tapping the funnel to remove the last granule of powder. [Yes, one big hassle? And tapping on the funnel for the next 50 years could give one Reloader's wrist! I kid you not.] Metallic Cartridge reloading, on bottom right of page 11, states - One deadly enemy of the handloader is static electricity, which lurks constantly around anything plastic. An aluminum powder funnel avoids the problem of static electricity generated by the sliding of powder granules across its inner face. However, only Pacific makes aluminum powder funnels. The other makers use plastic, and these can cause erratic powder charges, some of which are excessive. Lyman 51st Handloading Handbook, on pages 30 and 40, states - Lyman lab technicians have observed a potential serious phenomenon involving mechanical powder scales, plastic loading blocks, Styrofoam packaging, and other objects made of plastic. These materials sometimes retain static electric charge, enough to create an electro-static field of varying radii. This electro-static field has proven capable of causing radical deflection of uncharged and zeroed scales. Dependent upon circumstances, powder in the scale pan tends to dampen the amount of deflection by varying degrees. We strongly urge that the loading bench be cleared before setting up the scale. Then replace equipment one piece at a time while observing the scale pointer. Any item that causes a scale deflection should be removed from the reloading bench. The ABCs of Reloading 10th Edition, upon top left of page 161, under "Environmental Conditions" states - conditions that can compromise your safety or loaded ammunition's integrity. static electricity which is never a good thing around powder. Modern Reloading Second Edition Richard Lee Revised 2021, about the bottom half of page 85, under the heading "What are the causes of excessive pressure?" states - "It seems that some shooters were experiencing hot loads from what should have been quite safe. With much detective work, they found the problem occurred only when loading from the bench and immediately firing the round. Ammunition loaded away from the range worked fine. They discovered that the normal jostling of travel reduced the pressure to correct levels. Accurate recommends that ammunition loaded at the shooting bench be rolled back and forth a couple of times to rearrange the powder granules." [Rolling the cartridges around releases the static charge in the powder due to the use of plastic powder thrower reservoirs, plastic dippers, plastic powder pans, plastic funnels, and even plastic loading blocks, as well as any and all plastic primer trays. One should also avoid plastic laminated counter tops too.] Here is one from a Black Powder Manual, in case anyone is thinking about using plastic stuff to handle Black Powder. SPG Lubricants, BP Cartridge Reloading Primer: Chapter 1 - Powder, page 22 - WARNING: "BLACK POWDER IS CONSIDERED AN EXPLOSIVE AND IS EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO SPARKS OR STATIC ELECTRICITY. ITS USE WITH PLASTIC FUNNELS OR POWDER MEASURE HOPPERS IS TO BE AVOIDED. HEED ALL WARNINGS FOUND ON THE CANS OF BLACK POWDER." So Plastic tools around Black Powder is an extreme no no, and should never be done, period! So why buy a cheap plastic funnel for smokeless powders only to turn around and have to buy a descent aluminum funnel later on when one decides to do black powder too. And yes according to many manuals static electricity can be a highly hazardous - deadly enemy - to the reloader of which can compromise the integrity of their smokeless powder ammunition and even explode modern primers, as quoted previously, endangering their lives. A senior ballistician [who will remain nameless at this point] currently working for Hornady (in a Hornady pod cast here on UA-cam) tells a story about a reloader,, in his teenage neighborhood, that is no longer here with us and the house is gone as well. The fire marshal had declared static electricity to be the culprit that ignited the explosion. KABOOM! Another one bites the dust (very possibly a primer dusting incident laced with static electricity that is)! Yet just the pure hassle of having to wipe plastic tools down all the time as well as having to remove them from the reloading bench when using powder scales is simply the last straw in my book. I mean why bother when there are aluminum funnels, wooden loading blocks, metal powder pans, etc... Some may live in a high humidity area of which they have no issues with static electricity, but for them (through cognizant dissidence) to tell others, that may actually live in lower humidity areas where static electricity abounds, not to worry about such just because they never had any issues with static electricity would be irresponsible. Again no matter how long one has been reloading the people that make the manuals have far more knowledge of the situation than they ever will. Be safe and read the manuals.Illustrated

    I have two Lee Collet Neck Dies and initially the collet would get stuck after substantial use and stick inside of the upper part. As long as I kept using the same cases with similar neck wall thickness it still functioned. Then I sanded the outside of the collet with that 1500 sandpaper (black) after I applied some water on the paper and removed all that excess grungy material on the surface and also inside of the upper part and now the collet doesn't stick anymore. Why I have two dies is because I removed the primer pin from one of the dies so when the neck wasn't set properly and the bullet did not seat properly all I have to do is remove the bullet and powder and resize the case neck without removing the primer.

    Well done video. Can't understand why more high accuracy shooters have not discovered the precision that the lee collet neck die produces. Someone else noted that if you use the Lee Collet with a Redding body sizing die you have an excellent case with almost zero run out when properly adjusted. I agree and have been doing so for some years now.

    I realized this is quite an old video but I had to make comments on it. For what it is that Lee collet die is actually quite functional. I have had it iron out neck concentricity issues without having turn necks which is quite nice. But that is essentially the effect you are getting. It ironed out your necks. I shoot in the heavy 1000yd benchrest class here in Central Texas and I have used that die for competitive ammo. We were so resistant to doing any formal sizing on our brass, that we would have to beat our bolts closed with mallets to retain a good case dimension after using the Lee die several times. Now I use a full set of custom Wilson dies but I like that Lee die and I have never used the Hornady die so I can't speak for it. But I think I paid $16US for my Lee die. You can't even get a good pizza for that right now 😁. Cheers man!

      13 years ago - totally forgot about that video! :) I still use a Lee collet neck die, but generally just to push any neck thickness variation to the outside before neck turning. Brilliant for that. For normal sizing, I use a full length die all the time these days. I like the consistency (on target) by bumping the shoulder 2 thou every time. Consistency is everything. Thanks for the comment - good memories from that time :)

      Thanks :) I do use a heavy crimp as in .45 Colt I find the pressures (for the low velocity target loads I use) are not enough to have the case expand to fill the chamber. The heavy crimp allows me much more consistent velocity (better accuracy) and no blow back (clean chamber and higher reliability over a full competition day). Annealing the brass enables it to last almost forever, even with that heavy crimp. Some pieces I've reloaded over 70 times and they are still going strong with no signs of mouth cracking.

      I don't know what happened to the discussion on this post, but it just disappeared. Anyways, what I was going to reply was I shoot F-Class @1k and I don't see a difference. Now Bench Rest @ 1k might be different. They're trying to make the tiniest group whereas we're trying to reduce the vertical much as possible and keep it within 1MOA across 20 shots for record. Even Erik Cortina has told me it makes no difference if you're in a node. What will make more impact is the bullet weight and where the ogive is, because that can take you out of the node and why it matters to check where the CBTO is when switching across lots of bullets as the ogive can move on you and take the rifle out of tune. Even John Masek will explain that's why he's less concerned about being dead on the money with the powder, but he still measures every bullet's length. The FX-120i has a tolerance of +/- 0.02 grains. That means that a 41.60 grains powder charge may be 41.58 or 41.62 but still give you a 41.60 reading. More than likely it would be a 41.587 to 41.607 weight.

    I have never considered annealing 45 colt brass, but if you're getting that many loads from the brass...as expensive as brass is these days I'm finding it intriguing!

    • @ShootingAndReloading
      @ShootingAndReloading 2 роки тому

      I was actually very conservative with my brass reload count in the video. Looking back at my records, the batch of 300 brass I'm using is now 5 years old and 100 is fired 3 Sundays from 4. So each piece will have been fired at least 65 times. No signs of wear or mouth splitting and I'd expect them to last for a long time yet. The really advantage is in consistency though. For maximum precision, a consistent crimp is essential and in testing I get significantly tighter groups with annealed vs non-annealed.

      @@ShootingAndReloading That's amazing to me! you know the guy's with custom guns having custom chambers (long range target rifles) would reuse the same ten cases a thousand times! yes... a thousand...if I recall correctly. I'll have to dig out that book if I still have it. Something about custom chambers and annealing that the brass basically never wears out. I don't remember the caliber, but it was the popular 6mm of the day as I recall. I can tell you that you certainly don't want to use blackpowder and leave the cases unclean! I did that 30 something years ago and they split the 3rd firing! I think it was starline brass which as I recall was an up and coming company at that time...could be wrong as I had all sorts of odd and imported brass at that time... it was so inexpensive then too... I remember back when I'd gripe about a thousand 45 colt bullets being twenty something bucks! Lord I can't cast them for that now...even with free lead!

    Great video Adam, thank you. I was interested to observe you talk about OAL rather than CBTO ( Cartridge base to ogive) since it's the ogive that is going to contact the lands not the tip of the projectile, I would have thought for more reliable consistency the CBTO would provide a better result. I found quite a variation in the measurement of the projectile when measured boat tail to meplat.

    • @ShootingAndReloading
      @ShootingAndReloading 2 роки тому

      Hi Andy. I always measure CBTO. As you say there, measuring to the bullet tip is not reliable. You will see in part 2 of this series where I go through my loading process (ua-cam.com/video/mxfV3lgk4xU/v-deo.html) that I only measure CBTO.

      I'd rather not provide my code in the public domain incase someone ends up hurting themselves with a turning target and sues me! It is a litigious world... It's all written with NodeRed - very simple stuff. There is no phone app as such. The Raspberry Pi acts as a wifi access point and web server. You just need to go to a specific URL on any device.

    How are you liking your Tikka T3X ? I’ve got a tikka T3X UPR in 308, and I’m getting a T3X Tac A1 in 6.5 Creedmoor, a guy in my club has the same rifle as yours I think those rifles are amazing

      Loving the rifle :) My single gripe with it is the magazine which typically does not feed the penultimate round reliably. I've tried some suggested fixes and still not getting it 100%, however there is an after-market option from "Waters Rifleman" which I'll try.

      @@gerrymccann2450 I expect you've got you TAC A1 by now and thoroughly enjoying it. I got my TAC A1, in black and tan 6.5 Creedmoor, a year ago and it's had 800+ rounds through it already. I love it, we shoot 300 to 900 metres at our club and as a total beginner I was amazed at how good the TAC A1 was, I feed from the magazine because I don't like the distraction of single feeding and have had no problems with the mag, although it is a little difficult to get the full 10 rounds into the mag, I have 2 mags and since we shoot 10 rounds with 2 sighters I put 6 rounds in each mag. Loving the videos Adam, level of detail is superb.

    Hi Kevin. Thank you for sharing with us. This is one of the more thoughtful and informative load development video series that I have seen. I appreciate the considerable time and effort you have put into it. The production values and editing are top notch and I am definitely looking forward to more of it, especially at longer ranges. Do the longer OAL rounds still fit in the factory magazine, and if so, do they feed reliably? What type and height scope rings are you using? You may have said this, but I missed it.

    • @ShootingAndReloading
      @ShootingAndReloading 2 роки тому

      Hi Timothy. Thanks very much for the feedback :) The rounds still have about a quarter of an inch space in the mag. I suspect Tikka designed the mag to accommodate long VLD bullets. No issues with feeding per-se... although I do get the occasional issue on the penultimate round where the bolt skips over the top. I need to try some of the mag fixes I've seen online. The rings are Vortex "Pro Series" extra high (scope centre @1.54 inches / 39.1 mm). Not fancy by any means, but they are doing the job nicely.

    • @ShootingAndReloading
      @ShootingAndReloading 2 роки тому

      Thanks Tim. I'm not really a "UA-camr", just trying to share the load development I do with each new rifle. It seems to work well for me, but everyone has their own way :) The H2 moderator seems really quite good. Compact and with good sound attenuation. Easily stripped for cleaning and inexpensive. I suspect it will not last as long as a heavy steel mod, but at the price if I can get a few years out of it, that's fine. Time will tell.... To be honest, I wouldn't have bothered with a moderator on this rifle, but one of our club ranges requires their use. So, if it's needed at all, it needs to be fitted all the time - barrel harmonics change on and off.
